MARKET traders say continuing delays to the Dock Street bus stop has lost them potential business.
Work on the much delayed Market Square facility, located behind Newport Market, should be finished by January 21 according to Newport City Council.
The authority had aimed to open the bus stops before Christmas.
But Councillor Ken Critchley, cabinet member for engineering and transport, said in full council they could not guarantee the start date.
Traders have been disappointed at the late opening of the facility, which they hoped would attract more people to the market.
Market butcher Dan Cueto said he was not confident the service would be ready in time, after previous dates from the council have been missed.
Mr Cueto added: "We were hoping that the bus stop would bring in extra trade over the festive period, but as it wasn't open that's trade we've potentially lost."
In a statement Councillor Critchley said a computer simulation was used in the design of the facility to ensure the passage of buses through it.
He said: "Following a series of practical tests with Newport Transport and other agency vehicles, it was suggested that some alterations were made."
Concerns were also expressed about other issues, including the installation of traffic lights for buses alighting into Old Green, Councillor Critchley added.
At full council on Tuesday Councillor Critchley said fewer routes than planned may use the stop.
He said: "We cannot guarantee the work will be completed before the end of January."
The council said Stagecoach is due to begin using the facility from January 21, with Newport Transport buses following soon.
