A CAERPHILLY borough business is able to safeguard its jobs thanks to half a million pounds of funding from the Welsh Government.
Hawker Siddeley Switchgear – based in Pontllanfraith – manufactures electrical switchgear and overhead line equipment.
Clients of Hawker Siddely Switchgear include Network Rail, Western Power Distribution, London Underground, Sydney Trains and metro projects in China.
They will be using £500,000 from the Welsh Government to move from their Pontllanfraith base to the former British Airways interior seats assembly factory in nearby Blackwood.
They believe the site will provide an ideal location for the business. The move will safeguard 196 jobs, offering minimal disruption to their workforce.

Chris Abbott, CEO of BRUSH Group – Hawker Siddeley Switchgear’s parent company – said: “Given HSS’ proud local history, we are delighted HSS is moving to its new factory and office site in Blackwood to allow it to continue its story in the Welsh valleys.
“I would like to thank the Welsh Government for its support as we look forward to an exciting future growing our business by supporting both UK and global electrical distribution markets.”
Welsh Government’s economy minister Vaughan Gething said: “Hawker Siddeley Switchgear is a well-established company which has been anchored in the local community for 80 years. They are an important employer in the region, and I am delighted out support will help them to future proof their operations at a time when they are anticipating significant business growth.
“This government is committed to backing Welsh businesses, and as we emerge from the coronavirus pandemic, one of my priorities is to kickstart Wales’ economic recovery, ensuring it becomes an engine for sustainable, green growth.
“This investment is further proof of that, with Hawker Siddeley Switchgear set to play a role in replacing ageing UK infrastructure and making the network fit for new electric vehicles over the coming years.
“This continues to be an incredibly challenging time, but this announcement will protect quality jobs being lost from the south east Wales region and provide a vital boost to the local economy.”
