AN eco friendly couple are doing their bit for the environment by opening an eco-pub in Monmouthshire.
Sion Driscoll, 32, originally from Tredegar and his wife Jessica, 30 quit their jobs as teachers in Hereford and bought the Navigation in Gilwern last August.
Mrs Driscoll said: "We are both environmentally conscious and when our son Morgan, who is now two was born we thought it was the right time as we could spend more time together and do something we felt passionate about.
"Also, we can feed him up with organic casseroles now as well."
All the food sold is created using local produce such as meat, chutney and Welsh pickles, with fair trade chocolate bought from the Cacao Tree in Monmouth.
The pub is set in a picturesque location on the Brecon and Monmouth canalside and while the owners give leaflets to customers about climate care and animal welfare they hope to earn a Green Dragon environmental standards award this year.
"We recycle all bottles and cooking oil and will be putting a composting corner in place this year. Also, Sion is going to start making his own organic sausages and burgers," added Mrs Driscoll.
The couple have also joined an initiative that will help them offset their carbon footprint. It will calculate what the footprint is and the Driscolls will give a donation to a charity to offset this.
The pub attracts a mixture of locals, tourists and people attending Abergavenny's market with the former teachers hoping to further spread the message about the merits of organic produce.
