MORE than £300 was raised for charity – through the power of pizza.
Al Forno, based on Chartist Way in the Rogerstone area of Newport, gave out free nine inch margherita pizzas between 11am and 3pm on Tuesday, September 23.
In lieu of paying people receiving the free pizzas were asked to donate to mental health charity Mind.
Founded in 1946, Mind offers information and advice to people with mental health problems and experienced a sizeable increase in calls to its emergency helpline throughout the coronavirus pandemic
The day was deemed successful with Al Forno giving out 92 free pizzas and raising £327 in cash for Mind Newport.
Co-owner of Al Forno, who also own Tin Can Kitchen based in a nearby shipping container, Barry Fallon said: “People from all over Newport came along.
“All proceeds went to Mind Newport; we feel the work they do is vitally important, especially given the impact of the coronavirus pandemic and lockdowns.
“We’re really happy with the result; we were worried people wouldn’t come along, but Newport did us proud and we would do it again in a heartbeat.”
The day also marked the of Al Forno's very first student discount card. Upon presentation of a valid NUS ID, any university or college student can sign up for the card, which grants card holders a 25 per cent off pizza, Italian deli subs, sides, desserts and drinks (terms & conditions apply).
