Benjamin Mathews was confronted after he had broken into a house on Newport’s Gordon Street during the early hours of August 17.

“The defendant said the victims were doing an insurance job.

Mathews, 42, of Colston Place, Newport, pleaded guilty to burglary and attempted burglary.
The court was told he had 18 previous convictions for 25 offences.
The defendant was a third-strike burglar where a minimum sentencing tariff applies.
Scott Bowen, representing Mathews, said in mitigation: “He wishes to apologise to the victims and is deeply regretful.
“The defendant is pleaded guilty at the first opportunity.
“He had consumed alcohol and had over prescribed with Valium.”
Mr Bowen added how his client had struggled to cope following the death of his mother and having to look after his elderly father and disabled brother.
Judge Timothy Petts jailed Mathews for three years and will serve half that sentence in custody before being released on licence.
The defendant was also ordered to pay a victim surcharge following his release from prison.
