THERE are fears a new sinkhole is about to appear in a Liswerry road - just as another which emerged earlier this month is close to being repaired.

Cromwell Road in Lliswerry has been closed since the hole emerged in the middle of the road around three weeks ago.

And now there a fears another is about to appear nearby, with a large dip having appeared in Portskewett Street within the past week.

Although it has been reported to Newport City Council, residents claim that there has been no response from council services.

Some also said their drains were blocked, but it is unknown if this has contributed to the new dent in the road. Welsh Water have been contacted and residents are waiting for them to investigate.

While the dip may not result in a sinkhole, it is certainly steep enough to need repair and may indicate issues with the road integrity.

Lliswerry ward member Cllr Allan Morris indicated that the council contractors who are working on Cromwell Road will soon investigate a third reported dip on nearby Liscombe Street

There is a reason to be cheerful however, as contractors reportedly said that there are no further issues on Cromwell Road, and that work is on course to be complete by the end of this week.

The road has been closed since September 9 when a void in the middle of the road was discovered.

Although traffic was supposed to be blocked from the road, there were several incidents of vehicles ignoring the signs and barriers.

Sturdier barriers had to be erected in order to combat this.

Newport City Council has been contacted regarding the dip in the middle of Portskewett Street, but have so far failed to respond.
