A SUSPECTED drink driver who smashed up a car is lucky to not have caused serious injuries.

Gwent Police have reminded the public of the dangers of drink driving following an incident in the evening of Friday October 1; no serious injuries were caused but the driver of the car was arrested.

The force tweeted: “This is the result of drink driving, thankfully there were no serious injuries.

“The driver of this car was arrested last night [October 1] on suspicion of drink driving and driving without due care and attention.

“Blood samples were taken and are awaiting analysis.”

Research suggests that there are five main factors – known as the ‘fatal five’ – which have the potential to cause serious accidents on the road.

These are:

  • Careless driving
  • Drink and drug driving
  • Not wearing a seatbelt
  • Using a mobile phone
  • Speeding

People who carry out these acts put themselves – and others – in danger, and risk legal action being taken.

Those who drive above the legal limit of alcohol could get:

  • A driving ban for at least one year (three years if convicted twice in 10 years)
  • Six months in prison
  • An unlimited fine
  • Three to 11 penalty points

And driving without due care and attention can led to between three and nine penalty points, with the offence on the person’s driving record for four years.
