THE proposed closure of 25 Post Offices will cause an outcry today.

From experience of Post Office closures, we know the strength of feeling this causes in our communities.

There is little doubt that the Post Office still provides a vital service in our villages and towns.

Even in this day of high-tech communications, there are those who rely heavily on this local facility.

Already comments are coming in on our website after we broke the news in the early hours of this morning.

Some are worried because they cannot drive and would be unable to get to another Post Office unless they paid for a taxi.

Others are worried about the implications for the elderly.

We understand their concerns and hope they make their voices heard over the next few weeks during a public consultation period.

The Post Office says it has not taken the matter lightly and say the proposals "offer the best prospect for a sustainable way forward".

It's no secret that the Post Office has been in crisis for years and has lost money hand over fist.

Many blame this on poor management and a failure to keep up with changing technologies.

Whatever the cause, it is clear that the strategy is to close as many Post Offices in order to stop the business sliding even further.

And that means you, the customer, losing out.

One Post Office insider tells us that is highly unlikely any U-turns will be made now these proposals have been made public.

Communities need services and taking them away if they are still viable is complete madness.

We urge readers to ensure they contact their local MP, AM and councillors and to write or call the Post Office using the address, email or phone number in our story today.

If it makes good business sense to keep a branch open and you can prove it then make sure you get your points across as soon as possible.
