A WOMAN spoke of her shock this morning after waking to find water flooding into her parent's Newport home.

Shazia Ahmed, 28, said her parents' back garden in Llanthewy Road, resembled a swimming pool after a blocked drain led to massive amounts of water gathering in the back garden and streaming into the family kitchen.

Mrs Ahmed said: "It was like a waterfall coming into the kitchen. The water was about four inches deep inside the house and it was up to the knees in the garden."

Mrs Ahmed, who is looking after the house for her parents' who are on holiday contacted the fire brigade immediately.

Around half a dozen fire officers from Maindee fire station pumped water from the garden and workers from Newport council were also called.

The flood was just one of many that brought widespread distruption to Gwent this morning.

In Abergavenny five houses were flooded in Station Road. Roads closed include the Newbridge road at the Trecelyn Bridge; the A48 at Penhow; the road at Taylors Garage, Coldra.

There is also serious flooding effecting the Wye Valley Hotel and several properties in Tintern.

The A467 at Crumlin and the Raglan Road are both passable with extreme care.

There were also 50mph speed restrictions on the M4 near Newport this morning because of spray.

Flood watches were in force on the River Usk in Monmouthshire and Newport, the River Wye in Monmouthshire, and the Rivers Ebbw, Sirhowy and Lwyd.

A spokesman for the Met Office said 20mm of rain (just under one inch) fell in Machen between midnight and 7am.

More rain is expected to hit Gwent throughout the week and continue into the weekend.

Experts predict as much as a month worth of rain could fall over the next few days.
