THE Welsh filming of a new version of the 1980s fantasy film Willow - starring actor Warwick Davis - has encountered some challenging conditions along our local coastline this week.

Cameras and crew were spotted battling heavy rain on Pendine Sands on Tuesday as they filmed shoreline scenes, featuring a rider on horseback and a large vehicle - described by one watcher as 'a cross between a stagecoach, a boat and a sled'.

Warwick Davis has been filming in Wales for the Disney+ mini-series all summer, with studio time at Dragon Studios, Bridgend and local location shots reportedly at Tenby and Saundersfoot, as well as Pendine.

The Harry Potter and Star Wars star - has been spotted out and about on several occasions this summer, including at Saundersfoot, although he did not appear to feature in this week's shooting.

Warwick is reprising his role in the original Willow film, made in 1988, in which he plays dwarf Willow Ufgood who protects a baby named Elora Danan from an evil queen (Jean Marsh).

The new mini-series is being made by the Disney-owned Lucasfilm, where company executive, Pembrokeshire-born Lynwen Brennan - who grew up in Penally - played a key role in negotiations with the Welsh Government to secure filming in Wales.

The film was conceived by Star Wars creator and founder of Lucasfilm, George Lucas. Disney acquired Lucasfilm in 2012 in a $4 billion deal.

In a statement at the start of filming, the Welsh Government said: "We are also hugely excited to welcome Lucasfilm to Wales. Lucasfilm will be shooting Willow, an epic fantasy adventure series, which will debut on Disney+ in 2022.

"The series continues the spirit of adventure, heroics, and humour of Ron Howard’s 1988 feature film, which was shot in Llanberis in Gwynedd."
