PLANS to build new affordable apartments in Newport have been submitted.
But, if approved, a former pub in the city would have to be demolished to make way for the new homes.
A planning application to build 18 affordable apartments on Nash Road, in the Liswerry area of the city, was submitted to Newport City Council’s planning department this week.
The location of the development is 2 Nash Road, the site of the Victoria Inn pub.
Documents show that the first stage of the development would be to demolish the existing pub building, before the apartments, associated amenities, and car parking can be constructed.

Most recently, the pub has stood empty and disused, having closed down due to the pandemic in March 2020.
It is believed that the decision to shut the doors permanently was made at the beginning of 2021.
Now, the site could be set for a new lease of life – subject to planning approval.

What do plans show?
The application has been submitted by agents Kennedy James Griffiths on behalf of the applicant - Castell Construction Ltd.
However, when completed, an agreement has been made that would see Newport City Homes purchase the development, and operate the site as affordable housing.
This would consist of 13 single bedroom apartments suitable for up to two people, and five two-bedroom apartments for up to three people.
Documents show that the apartments would be set out over three floors, ranging from ground to second floor, with pedestrian access from Nash Road.
Artist impressions submitted along with the application show how the newly build development could look.
These show that the roof of the site would be home to solar panels, in a bid to improve the energy efficiency of the site.
To the rear of the building, it is proposed that there will be secure car parking for residents, and cycle storage for up to 16 bikes.
It is believed that Newport City Homes require one car parking space per property of theirs, and as a result, the plans show that this site would have a total of 21 car parking spaces.
Four electric car charging points are also believed to form part of the application.
The planning application is available to view and comment upon online here.
It is not yet known when planning officers might make a decision.
