A KITTEN had a lucky escape after almost being burned alive at a Cardiff lake.

A woman was walking her dog at Hendre Lake in St Mellons between 4pm and 5pm on Thursday, October 14, when she heard a loud meowing noise coming from behind some bushes.

She went to investigate and found three boys – thought to be aged around 12 or 13 – holding a black bin liner and discussing "burning the cat" that was inside.

The woman intervened and threatened to call the police, which caused the boys to run off. The woman found a tiny black and white kitten that was clearly distressed inside the bag.

The kitten – thought to be aged just seven or eight months – was taken home by the woman before he was collected by the RSPCA.

RSPCA inspector Simon Evans took the male kitten to be checked over, and it was found to be unhurt. He is now being looked after by the RSPCA as he was not microchipped. If an owner does not come forward, the kitten will be rehomed by the charity.

RSPCA Cymru are looking for anyone who has any information about the incident or anyone who may have lost a kitten.

Inspector Evans said: “This sort of incident beggars belief, and we are extremely grateful that this kind-hearted member of the public intervened when she did.

“Although understandably nervous at first after his ordeal, the kitten is now doing well. He’s had a thorough check over, including some flea and worm treatment, and is now safe and enjoying lots of TLC.

“As well as appealing for information about this appalling incident, someone could be missing their cat as the lake is very close to residential areas. If this is you, please get in touch with the RSPCA.”

Anyone with any information should contact the RSPCA’s inspectorate appeal line on 0300 123 8018.
