PLANS to open a new pizza outlet in Newport have taken a step forward.

In late 2019, plans to open a number of food and drink outlets on the former Comet site in Maesglas were unveiled.

While plans to open a Starbucks and Greggs have taken shape in recent months, the initial proposal also revealed that a new Domino’s pizza chain would be opening too.

Since then, little has been said about the popular pizza franchise’s expansion plans in the city.

However, while little has been said about the new Domino’s store since the initial announcement, construction work on all three units has quietly taken shape.

Initially, it was thought that the new outlets, on Port Road would be ready by mid-October.

Though this date has passed, progress has continued to be made – including an update on the Domino’s plans.

Last week, AEW Architects submitted plans to Newport City Council, outlining the signage and layout of the new store.

Should they be approved, it will see the installation of illuminated signs in and around the retail unit.

What else is there to know about the plans?

Once open, it will be the third Domino’s to take residence in Newport.

Currently, there are branches on Malpas Road and Chepstow Road.

Further afield there are also Domino’s outposts in Risca, Cwmbran and Pontypool.

In late 2019, plans were first outlined to build food outlets at the Port Road site – next to the existing Maesglas Retail Park.

Initially, it was thought that Domino’s would be joined by Burger King and Costa Coffee.

But, in early 2021, it was revealed that plans would be moving ahead – albeit with a Starbucks and Greggs branch instead.

Most recently, the coffee chain has been looking for staff at this new branch, with signs posted in their Kingsway store in the city centre encouraging applicants to apply.

To date, there does not appear to be any advertisements for jobs at the other two premises at the development.

However, the initial plans suggest that between the three, the equivalent of 70 full-time jobs would be created.
