A RISCA woman who was told she “wasn’t cut out for maths and technology” in school has launched her own 3D printing business.
Earth Symbols was launched by 35-year-old Jade Newman in April 2021, offering unique jewellery and accessories designed and made from resin, real flowers, and embellishments with a zero-waste focus.
Her products have been sent across the UK, Germany, Spain, Portugal, and even Canada.
The mother-of-two said: “When I was 14, I was told I wasn’t cut out for maths and technology – I was disheartened, and it really knocked my academic confidence.
“I always tried so hard to achieve good grades and always felt that my application and efforts in those subjects were being ignored, in favour of those who were naturally gifted in those subjects.”
But she didn’t let that stop her - earlier this year she turned her passion for technology and design into a business, creating products using 3D printing and flowers from her garden or allotment.
Earth Symbols is her "side hustle" - her day job of the past eight years is director of a family business, started by her father more than 30 years ago, Phil Harvey Tyres in Risca.
“I do all the accounts side of things - a job that relies heavily on mathematics and computer skills,” said Ms Newman.
“I frequently look back at when those teachers who told me I couldn't. I gives me great pleasure knowing that - despite how hard I had to work - I achieved my goals and more.
"Now I feel that I don't really have to prove anything to anyone - just myself."

She continued: “My advice for girls who struggle in school with academic subjects, or those going into male dominated industries is: always believe in yourself and your abilities.
"There will be challenges you face but visualise your goals and work as hard as you can to achieve them.
"There will always be people who tell you 'you can't' but there is great pleasure in proving them wrong.”
