FIVE men have been arrested following a stabbing in Cardiff city centre this morning.

South Wales Police were called to Royal Arcade just after 8am this morning following reports of a fight.

Five men - aged 18, 19, 37, 38 and 44 - have been arrested on suspicion of affray.

Three of the five have injuries that require medical attention, including a 44-year-old man from Merthyr Tydfil who has a stab wound.

None of the injuries are described as life-threatening. A knife has been recovered for forensic examination.

Officers are studying CCTV to establish the exact circumstances and location of the fight.

A spokesperson said: "Understandably there is shock and worry within the community when an incident such as this happens.

"Levels of knife offences in the UK have risen over the last few years, and South Wales is no different to anywhere else in that respect.

"Cardiff remains a safe place and tackling knife crime is a priority for the force."

Since April, the Cardiff Operation Sceptre Team, named after a national initiative led by the Metropolitan Police, has:

  • arrested 178 people
  • seized nearly 50 weapons
  • carried out 421 stop searches
  • recovered drugs and cash worth more than £3 million.

Families and communities can play their part in helping to tackle serious violence by taking responsibility for their children and young adults who are on the fringes of criminality or at risk of carrying a knife.
