A GWENT school has started the New Year on a healthy eating kick with the announcement of a new catering contract.
Forget fish cakes and beans, the new menu at Chepstow Comprehensive School will feature poached salmon wraps, fruity Caribbean curry and vegetarian chilli.
The school has brought in catering firm Scolarest on a three-year-deal to provide breakfast, lunch and breaktime catering services for 1,250 students and 130 members of staff.
There will also be a variety of pasta dishes, filled sandwiches, baguettes and panini and salad bars, as part of the company's promise to provide healthy meals.
Low-fat pudding choices will include fruit salad.
Chepstow School bursar Ian Roberts welcomed Scolarest on board, and said: "It is clear the food choice is attractive to all the customers, who have reacted very positively."
Tony Byrne, business director for Education at Compass Group, Scolarest's parent company, said the menus had been specially devised in line with the Government's standards on school meals.
