ABERGAVENNY residents woke up to a surprising new addition to the town centre this morning – as a giant reindeer had made itself comfortable on Nevill Street.

It didn’t take long for pictures to appear on social media of the festive visitor, with many posing next to it.

Rumours of the origin of the reindeer also began to swirl with one commenter, when asked where it had come from, replying with a tongue-in-cheek ‘Lapland’.

In fact, the reindeer is the work of Abergavenny Town Council, as part of a campaign to entice Christmas shoppers to the area.

Installed for the town’s children, according to the council, the reindeer was also attracting the attention of slightly older but no less excitable passers-by.

“It was discussed that we install a Christmas feature for children, and decided upon a reindeer.

“The businesses in that area will be launching their Reindeer Quarter next Wednesday, and it is our intention to have the Reindeer Feature in place until after Christmas.

“The reindeer will feature in the Abergavenny Town Council’s virtual Christmas light switch-on film, which will be launched online next week.”
