ARMED police arrested a Newport man on suspicion of assault yesterday.
The armed response team, made up of around seven officers carrying baton rounds, was called to a ground floor flat on Beaufort Road, St Julians, after a call at around 11.30am.
Officers were led to believe the resident had a knife, but officers did not find any weapons in a search of the flat.
The man was taken to Newport Central police station to be interviewed.
Officers also called at an address on Constable Drive at around the same time, which is where the alleged assault was said to have happened.
The nearby St Julians Infants School was not informed about the incident by police, but pupils were kept inside by staff until it was over.
Police said this morning the man was released on bail pending further investigations.
