THE A466 at Tintern will remain closed over the weekend following the major landslide in the village on Tuesday.
A huge volume of rainwater running off Barbadoes Hill caused 200 tonnes of debris to slide onto the road - the third landslip in the village inside a year.
Diversions are in place through Catbrook, but the route is not suitable for heavy vehicles.
A Monmouthshire council spokeswoman said the high levels of rainfalls in the last few days had delayed the reopening of the road.
Experts from the Forestry Commission are examining the site to determine what remedial measures are necessary to prevent a repeat of Tuesday's events.
