SHOPKEEPERS in Abergavenny are calling for action after a spate of vandalism by drunken revellers in the town.

An Abergavenny lingerie shop, Moira's of Frogmore Street, was left with £4,000 of damage after an incident on January 6.

Owner Edwina Samuel, who took over the shop 27 years ago, said: "It looked as though someone had fallen against the window, it smashed and shards covered all the display items and a rack of bras, some of them worth £60 a piece.

"With lingerie, you can't risk tiny pieces of glass being stuck in them, so we had to replace the whole lot, around £3,000 worth. On top of this, a new window cost £800."

A number of local stores such as Twinkle Toes and Richards have also fallen victim recently.

Ms Samuels says staggered drinking hours in the town are making it more difficult for officers to police.

A few doors up, Kutz the barbers had a window broken that cost £500 to fix on January 11.

Owner Kath Curtis said: "They come out of the pubs like loonies at 1am and 2am, it's about time something was done.

"It was a hand or head that went through my window as there was blood all around the frame and up the street."

Inspector Fran Richley of Abergavenny Police says there have been a number of smashed windows recently.

"Although such crimes can be difficult to prevent and detect, I am determined to ensure that we are doing everything with our power to achieve this," he said.

"Ironically, everyone ends up paying for such stupidity via increased insurance premiums, even those causing the damage."

Ins Richley added police patrols at relevant times and expanding the town's CCTV will help the situation.
