COUNCILS across Gwent are facing a £200 million repair and maintenance bill for schools.
Figures obtained by the Argus show that in Caerphilly, £70 million needs to be spent to bring schools up to National Assembly's "fit for purpose" guidelines by the required time of 2010, £40 million needs to be spend in Blaenau Gwent, Torfaen council's school maintenance backlog is over £26.16 million, Monmouthshire's is £7.5 million, and Newport's is at least £57.7 million.
Children in a number of Gwent schools are being educated in buildings with problems including:
- Damp or dry rot.
- Concrete cancer.
- Inadequate play or leisure areas.
