MORE than 100 children have entered a competition to design cards based on the story of the Welsh patron saint of lovers.
Pupils at the Welsh-medium school Ysgol Y Fenni in Abergavenny put pen to paper to design their entries for the competition that marks St Dwynwen's Day on Friday, January 25.
The competition, is a joint venture between Emma Lynch of Love Lily, a flower shop in Cross Street, and the school's parent governors.
Ms Lynch said: "Love Lily is passionate about flowers and art.
"We are keen to share this love and passion with the community and in particular with children, which is why this competition is so important."
Ysgol Y Fenni head teacher Ann Berris said the day is an important part of the country's culture.
"The children enjoyed making their own cards," said Mrs Berris.
"Designs range from hearts to flowers and images of Dwynwen herself."
St Dwynwen is the Welsh patron saint of lovers, making her the Welsh equivalent of St Valentine.
Dwynwen lived during the fifth century and fell in love with a prince called Maelon Dafodrill.
However her father had already arranged for her to marry someone else.
Dwynwen was devastated and never married, choosing to devote her life to God instead.
The two winning entries, which have yet to be decided, will be presented with bouquets and four runners up will receive posies.
