Monmouth MP David Davies, who referred the matter to the Electoral Commission, said: "I think it was inevitable that Peter Hain would have to resign after the Metropolitan Police confirmed they were investigating him.
"My own view is that because the donations were so large, it was always going to be difficult for the public to accept that an explanation of poor administration was to blame and that made his position untenable."
