TWO Gwent rivers are among six in south Wales which have "massive environmental potential" and are major potential tourism, recreation and education assets.
So says the newly created South East Wales Rivers Trust about the Sirhowy and the Ebbw, which along with the Ely, Taff, Rhondda and Rhymney will be targeted for further water and ecological improvement.
These rivers suffered for many decades from pollution from industry, sewage and collieries, and though they have improved considerably in recent times, the trust warns that problems remain.
These include litter and intermittent pollution from sewage and other materials. Invasive plants such as Japanese Knotweed also cause problems with access and flow.
The trust, backed by the Assembly, local authorities, Environment Agency Wales, the Countryside Council for Wales, the Association of Rivers Trusts Wales, and Keep Wales Tidy, wants to work with local groups and individuals to further improve these rivers.
