UP to 18 workers at Llanwern steelworks in Newport were suspended this week while Corus carries out an internal investigation into a possible breach of company rules.

The Argus understands the action could relate to drink and/or drug allegations.

Robert Dangerfield, a spokesman for the company, refused to confirm a report that 18 people were involved.

"We have suspended some individuals and an investigation is taking place. We are liaising with the unions according to all the due processes," said Mr Dangerfield.

He added he would not expand on the details due to confidentiality for those concerned.

Mr Dangerfield said the police could be involved at a later stage if it was necessary but at the moment they were investigating a potential breach of works rules.

He did say that the issue of alcohol was taken very seriously by the company.

Mr Dangerfield said a considerable undertaking was launched last year which involved Corus sponsoring an alcohol and substance misuse counsellor working in Newport.

It was an on-going major initiative together with the unions and some major contactors and suppliers.

"We realise that while it may be an issue for us, it is also an issue for the whole of society."
