PONTHIR WI: The first meeting in 2008 was held on Monday, January 7, at Ponthir Village Hall.
Mrs Jean Wiltshire, president, welcomed all members. Mrs Agnes Heath, secretary, dealt with the usual business and apologies were recorded.
The president introduced Jane Bridges, our speaker for the evening. Jane came along on behalf of the WRVS and briefly outlined the history of such a wonderful voluntary service.
It was established in 1938, just before the Second World War. She explained how women were then needed on the home front during those very sad and difficult times, helping out on disasters and providing meals at centres.
The role of the WRVS has slightly changed over the years, but the organisation still continues with new projects, mainly now visiting and using their special skills in calling on lonely people. She was thanked for her most delightful and informative talk by Mrs Irene Rees.
Many of our members have been members of this organisation, and quite recently had delivered meals in the Caerleon and Ponthir area.
The competition for a watercolour was won by Mrs Irene Rees, and she also won the raffle - lucky lady!
Tea hostesses were Mrs Nita Thomas and Mrs Elizabeth Price.
Members were reminded that the next monthly meeting would take place at Ponthir Village Hall, on Monday, February 4, at 7.15pm. Please come along and enjoy a pleasant hour together with us.
