A FLEET of state-of-the-art new buses will soon offer more comfortable and greener travel to Gwent passengers.
The 16 new low-floor buses, which cost a total of £1.25million, were unveiled in Torfaen by Stagecoach.
The Optare Solo buses have the latest in clean engine technology, meeting European emissions standards and helping cut carbon emissions.
They all have step-free entrances, allowing customers to roll on wheelchairs, buggies or shopping trolleys and park them in dedicated areas on board.
The vehicles, which also boast wider seats, greater legroom, climate control and brighter interiors, will be used on three services between Torfaen and Newport.
John Gould, managing director of Stagecoach in South Wales, said he hoped the new buses would inspire people to leave their cars at home and travel by bus instead.
Torfaen MP and new Welsh Secretary Paul Murphy, who attended the launch, said he was delighted Stagecoach made the investment in the local bus service.
He said: "This is great news for local residents, especially for those people who have mobility problems or parents with pushchairs, as these new low floor buses are so much easier to get on.
"This investment will help to revitalise these three key routes in South East Wales's bus network."
The buses will be used on route 15 from Newport to Trevethin, route 23 from Newport to Brynmawr and route 30 from Blaenavon to Newport.
Last year 1.1million passengers traveled with Stagecoach on these routes.
The company hopes the new buses will boost passenger numbers further.
