Penelope (U) *** Christina Ricci, James McAvoy, Reese Witherspoon and Peter Dinklage.

FOLLOWING hot on the heels of another frothy movie that was also charming and harmless enough, Enchanted, this is another film aimed at audiences who like their entertainment soft and cuddly.

Christina Ricci stars as a girl born with pig's nose and ears due to a spell put on her family.

Frantic to break the spell, her desperate parents (played by Richard E Grant and Catherine O'Hara) offer a huge dowry to prospective suitors in attempt to replace her porcine appearance with a more human face.

Unable to find a husband for their girl all seems lost.

That is until down-and-out gambler Max (the ubiquitous James McAvoy) arrives on the scene.

Before you can say, "And a packet of Pork Scratchings as well please," the couple fall in love.

But beware the crafty, intrepid news hound (Peter Dinklage) who has a nose for a world exclusive, who is thrown into the pigswill, sorry, mix.

Penelope is what it is. It's got a big heart and it wears it very much on its sleeve.

It's a nicely enough done but some,as others surely will, may not find it to their taste.
