YOUNGSTERS from a Newport secondary school took part in a martial arts workout to raise money to fight leprosy.

More than 100 Year Seven children at St Joseph's RC comprehensive school, completed a 45-minute sponsored Tae Kwon Do workout for Lepra, hoping to raise a substantial sum for a charity dedicated to helping eradicate the disease, a chronic, bacterial infection of the skin and nerves.

There are almost 620,000 new cases diagnosed every year, mainly in Africa, Asia and South America. Leprosy is curable through multi-drug therapy and more than 13 million sufferers have been cured since 1985.

"The children have responded magnificently. Gwent, as part of the south Wales region, is a generous contributor towards Lepra's work.

"A lot of schools in the area help us out," said community fundraiser Sue Morrish.

"We're having a second workout next week for remaining Year Seven children at St Joseph's. I hope they enjoy it as much as their fellow pupils have."
