PROTESTORS have launched a campaign to save Winchestown post office, Brynmawr.

Just a year ago, the business, which is described as the heart of the community, was threatened with closure, but after strong opposition, was saved.

Then it underwent a £50,000 upgrade.

Now, residents are up in arms that it is one of 21 in Gwent earmarked for closure.

Yesterday residents gathered outside the branch to launch their campaign.

With no shelter at the local bus stop, residents will be exposed to the elements while waiting for a bus to Brynmawr.

After getting off at the station there, they will then have to cross two busy roads to get what will be their nearest post office.

Wheelchair-bound Freda Lewis, 75 of Waun Fawr will be one of the hardest hit.

She has an electric wheelchair that allows her to get the 100 yards to the Winchestown post office.

But when it closes, she will have to rely on her daughter travelling from Pontllanfraith to take her to the Brynmawr branch.

Independent Cllr John Mason said: "As well as the £50,000 that will be wasted, it is predominantly an elderly community and most can't get to the post office in Brynmawr."

Doreen Mills, 65 of Roundhouse Close added: "My electricity is on a meter and the Brynmawr Post Office doesn't do top-ups, so I don't know what I'll do.

Nantyglo and Blaina town councillor Terry Maggs said: "It's no so far as the crow flies, but it's a bit like going 100 miles to get 10 yards with crossings and turnings which are difficult for older people."
