A GWENT council has announced burials planned for the day of the Queen’s funeral will have to be rearranged.

Caerphilly Borough Council has said no burials will take place at its ten cemeteries on Monday, September 19, which has been declared a bank holiday to mark the funeral of the late Queen Elizabeth II.

However, despite posting on its website that “municipal cemeteries will be closed for the day” the council has confirmed that, while no burials will take place, the sites will be open for people to visit.

Cremations at the Gwent Crematorium in Cwmbran can go ahead as planned.

Newport City Council, which is responsible for the crematorium in Croesyceiliog, has said families can, however, chose to re-arrange services planned for Monday. 

Funerals planned for council-run cemeteries in Newport can also go ahead with families again able to rearrange them for another date if they wish.

Blaenau Gwent council has said one funeral has been moved to Tuesday at the request of the funeral director following discussion with the family.

Newport and Blaenau Gwent councils have confirmed cemeteries will be open to visit on Monday while Torfaen Borough Council has said its cemetery offices will be closed, but cemeteries will be open for burials.

What is happening with waste collections? 

All waste collections across Gwent have been suspended on Monday and household recycling centres will also be closed.

In Newport waste collections will take place a day later than usual when they restart on Tuesday, September 20.

Collections in Blaenau Gwent will run a day later than normal from Tuesday to Saturday.

All of the council’s buildings including community hubs based in town libraries will also be closed.

Only essential services will be running in the borough and residents who need to contact the council will be able to use its emergency number 01495 311556.

Monmouthshire is also collecting waste a day later than usual throughout the week, while all its community hubs and libraries will be closed, including Usk Post Office.

Caerphilly Borough Council will collect waste a day later than usual, from Tuesday through to Saturday.

Libraries, leisure centres and council visitor attractions Llancaiach Fawr, Blackwood Miners Institute, Cwmcarn Visitor Centre, Coffi Vista and The Winding House will all be closed though the council’s Register Office will be open but for pre-booked ceremonies only.
