FIRBANKDALE SOCIAL CENTRE: This excellent centre has been serving the community for more than 50 years. There is a great variety of activities at the centre but it is available for bookings every afternoon and some mornings.

AGM: At the annual general meeting of Newport Floral Society Brenda Manby succeeded Elizabeth Graham as president, while Penny Lewis took over as chairman from Jane Evans.
Joan Jenkins judged the competitions. The results for the novice class named An Ocean of Calm were, 1st Pat Davies (Newport) 2nd, Pat Davies (Ponthir) 3rd, Diane Roberts. Intermediate Class, Scorched Earth, 1st, Shirley Palfrey, 2nd, Marilyn Woolley, 3rd, Eirlys Owen, Commended, Jane Evans. Advanced, In the Heat of the Night, 1st, Lucretia Goode, 2nd, Brenda Manby, 3rd, Rensie Wells, Commended, Nanette Adams. The Best Use of Foliage Cup was awarded to Shirley Palfrey, who was also given a special award for outstanding work for the society during the year.
Marilyn Woolley won a prize for The Best Use of Colour. Five-year badges were presented to Maureen Butterworth, Doris Jones, Isla Norton and Rensie Wells.
June Toleman proposed a vote of thanks to the officers and committee, who responded by providing afternoon tea.
New members are always made welcome on the first Thursday of the month at St Julian's Methodist Church at 2pm.
