MORE than a thousand Newport Scouts taking part in the annual St George's Day Parade gave a rousing cheer for their retiring district commissioner David 'Polly' Pollard.
The tribute was led by the Mayor of Newport Councillor Allan Morris who wore the neckerchief of the Newport District over full mayoral robes.
Councillor Morris, who chose the Scouts and Guides as his special charity, congratulated Mr Pollard on 10 years of service in the post.
"You have been spectacular. You have delivered everything the city and the Movement have asked of you."
As the Scouts reformed behind two marching bands at the end of the service at St Mark's Church the mayor said "You read a lot about youth in the papers but what we have here today are hundreds of smartly-dressed youg people who are a credit to this city."
A new standard for Newport Gang Show - the Scout entertainment that supports charity - was consecrated. Five new Venture Scouts were invested.
A replacement for Mr Pollard who has served two consecutive five-year terms as Newport District Commissioner will be selected after interviews.
"In those 10 years I've seen young people go right from Beavers to leaders" he said.
"Scouting grew by three per cent last year which was the centenary year.
"I am grateful to those who have supported me in making sure that after 100 years Scouting is as relevant as ever."
