GWENT Police's new chief constable was named tonight as Mick Giannasi.

Currently the force's deputy chief constable, Mr Giannasi will take over the top post from outgoing chief Mike Tonge, who is due to retire from the Force in the autumn.

Cilla Davies OBE, chairwoman of Gwent Police Authority, said: "We are delighted with this appointment.

"Mick Giannasi has a wealth of experience gained at chief officer level, and has already made a valuable contribution to Gwent as deputy chief constable.

"We look confidently to the future with him as Gwent's chief constable."

Mr Giannasi joined the force in April 2005.

He started his police career in Staffordshire in 1980, moving to Merseyside in November 2002 to take up his first chief officer position, as assistant chief constable.

He will start his new position on September 4.
