AN inspirational Gwent teacher has been shortlisted as one of the best teachers in Wales.
Chris Rogers, 32, of Abertillery, has been teaching maths for ten years and has been working at Oakdale Comprehensive for nine years.
The nomination came as a surprise to Mr Rogers, who was unaware that parents had but his name forward.
The parents were impressed with Mr Rogers' dedication to the school. Among other things, he runs an after school maths sessions, a school mechanics club, and helps to organise fundraising events.
But Mr Rogers remains modest about his success.
He said: "I was flattered, but a bit embarrassed because there's lots of good teachers.
"All of the teachers at Oakdale are great, I was just lucky to be nominated."
He added: "I enjoyed my school days and I wanted to become a teacher to give something back.
"It can be hard work, but it's very rewarding."
Mr Rogers will now go to a special event in June in Cardiff where the winner will be announced.
But even if he does not get the top title, Mr Rogers will still be a winner at Oakdale Comprehensive.
Head teacher Chris David said: "We are thrilled to bits, even if he doesn't win, we are proud of him for getting to the finals."
