NEWPORT pupils drew inspiration from Wallace and Gromit to create their own 3-D animations.

Eight and nine-year-olds from primary schools across the city made short films using their own characters at a two-day workshop in Rougemont School.

Part of Rougemont's Gifted and Talented Scheme, pupils who had displayed a flair for information computer technology (ICT) were invited to attend the workshops.

Teacher Ruth Carroll said it had given youngsters the opportunity to try new software, which they might not get the opportunity to use normally, and they had grasped the opportunity with enthusiasm.

The pupils began with 2D drawings before making 3D figures in plasticine, in the same way Nick Park created the award-winning Wallace and Gromit.

Ms Carroll said: "The standard of work produced by the pupils has been exceptionally high and they have all enjoyed seeing their characters come to life."

Head teacher Jonathan Tribbick said: "At Rougemont we are keen to build relationships with the local community. Running events such as these 3D animation workshops, using the school's modern ICT facilities, allows us to enrich the experiences of talented youngsters from across the region."
