FOOTBALL FESTIVAL: The promised special visitor at the St Julian's School sixth form charity event turned out to be no other than Wales international and Premiership defender, Chris Gunter.
Ex-pupil Chris, formerly of Cardiff City and now with Spurs, was the guest of honour at the fun day to raise money for two groups of 12 St Julian's students to visit an orphanage in the Ulambo province of Kenya in July.
Last year they helped build a toilet and shower block, while this year the building project is a classroom for the nursery.
The Kenya Appeal was set up by the charity trust Moving Mountains and the organisation Adventure Alternative. Together they have created an opportunity for young people to experience life in a completely different environment and to help make a difference in disadvantaged parts of the world.
The highlight of the fundraising fun day was the football match staff v students. This was an exciting and skilful game which ended honours even in a 2-2 draw. A popular attraction was soaking teachers in the stocks.
Other attractions included the tug-of-war, penalty shootout, martial arts display, cheerleading and, of course, cakes and refreshments. Together with the raffle more than £3,100 was raised.
Anyone wishing to help the project can send a cheque to the head made out to St Julian's School Fund.
STRAWBERRY TEA: Today, June 23, the St Julian's Methodist Monday Club is holding a strawberry tea to raise funds for the Antigua Project to build a community centre. The total cost is £90,000 and Newport Methodists are aiming to raise £10,000.
For £2 you can enjoy a scone, jam and cream, strawberries and ice cream. There will be a bookstall and raffle.
If you are not able to attend, a donation would be warmly welcomed for this excellent project. Please send cheques to The Antigua Project c/o The Manse, 1 St Julian's Avenue.
NOSTALGIA: The newly formed Newport Nostalgia Music Society, which specialises in the music of the 1930s, 40s and 50s, will make a presentation to the members of the St Julian's Senior Citizens' Club in Orchard Lane at 7pm tonight.
CONCERT: Something else to look forward to is the visit to the Methodist Church of the Newport Male Choir for another of their charity concerts on Thursday.
POLICE SURGERY: Friday, June 27, 10am-noon, Scout Hut, Bank Street.
