A NEWPORT supermarket has confirmed it is cutting its opening hours and adding more self-checkouts in the place of manned tills.

Asda in Pencarn Way, Duffryn, will now close at 10pm from Monday to Saturday as opposed to midnight.

On Sundays, customers can shop between 10am and 4pm.

It brings the closing times in line with the Asda store on Lower Dock Street, Pill - though Duffryn still opens an hour earlier at 6am.

From Monday to Thursday, the store offers a “quieter hour” between 2pm and 3pm by switching off the in-store radio and limiting tannoy announcements to emergency cases.

A company spokesperson said they had been making changes to “enhance the look and feel” in stores, though not every site is getting more self-checkouts.

They note that customers will be able to choose from a combination of self-checkouts, attended checkouts and scan-and-go options, adding: “colleagues will always be on hand to help”.

Last month, the chain revealed seven Co-op stores in Wales would become Asda Express, including branches in Rogerstone and Cardiff – wholly owned and operated by Asda.

South Wales Argus:

A spokesperson for Asda said: “We’ve recently been making some changes across our estate to enhance the look and feel of our stores, including adding more self-checkouts at some stores.

“We know that our customers like to have the choice of how they complete their shop which is why we have self-checkouts, attended checkouts and scan and go.

“Customers can be assured that colleagues will always be on hand to help.”

Last year, Asda said it had more than 145,000 employees across the UK, serving more than 18 million weekly customers.

There are currently four Asda stores in the Newport area - namely on Henllys Way in Cwmbran, Lower Dock Street in Pillgwenlly, Pencarn Way in Duffryn and Newport Retail Park in Spytty.
