STAFFING issues have forced a Newport post office to close as early as 2pm this week.
The branch at St Johns Crescent, Rogerstone, will close at 2pm on Thursday, December 13, and December 14.
It closed at 3pm today, Tuesday, December 12, and will close at 6pm tomorrow, Wednesday, December 13.
A spokesperson for the Post Office has apologised for the inconvenience.
The branch is usually open from 6am, or 7am on Sundays, until 10pm, offering cash withdrawals, cash deposits and cheque deposits in addition to mail services.
Last month, a “lighter” Post Office offering opened at St Lawrence Road in Chepstow town centre, allowing customers to access services from a handheld device.
More "complex" services like personal and business banking – both available at Rogerstone Post Office – are not available in Chepstow town.
Why is Rogerstone Post Office closing early this week?
Posting to a community page on Facebook, one local resident asked: “Does anyone know why the Rogerstone Post Office is no longer open in the evenings?
“I’ve been twice this week and the Post Office counter is closed, and the man serving there seems to have no idea why.”
Another user suggested the woman who normally worked on the Post Office counter retired this weekend.
“Looked to me like she was under a lot of pressure with little or no support,” the user said. “I wonder if they have staffing problems.”
Another, who claims to work at the McColl’s store attached, said “staff are taking holidays, plus they have cut our hours and some of the staff have left”.
A spokesperson for Post Office said: “Unfortunately, Rogerstone Post Office is experiencing staffing issues. We apologise for any inconvenience caused by this branch currently operating reduced hours.
“The opening hours for the remainder of the week are Tuesday 7am-3pm; Wednesday 7am-6pm; Thursday and Friday 7am-2pm.
“Alternative branches in the area include Thornbury Park and High Cross.”
The nearest Post Office branches can be found at Thornbury Park, High Cross, and Bassaleg, which are all within a mile.
