With the summer holidays now under way, we want to recommend to you some of the best dog friendly pubs in and around Newport.

Afterall, there is nothing better than sharing a day in the sun with your best friend.

Many of the pubs chosen are located in places with good dog walks, suitable for friends and families.

Our first stop is Caerleon, an old roman village in Newport with plenty of nice dog walks, playgrounds, a big pub scene, and if you are lucky sometimes even an ice-cream van.

We also go on to recommend some pubs in Chepstow, Usk and Abergavenny - all of which boast beautiful walking spots that anyone can enjoy.

1. The Ship Inn, Caerleon

In the Roman village of Caerleon, in Newport, the Ship Inn is a classic pub with a large outdoor seating area, welcoming dogs and humans alike.

With a kids play area perfect for entertaining during the six-week summer holidays, as well as bottomless brunch and a range of draught ales, this pub is one the whole family would enjoy - including your furry members.

On their menu you can find classic pub meals including fish and chips, burgers and Sunday roasts.

Located by the River Usk, there are also lots of pleasant dog walks along Bulmore Road and through the grounds of the 2010 Celtic Manor Golf Course.

They open everyday between 12-11pm.

2. The Boat Inn, Chepstow

Located at a riverside location overlooking the River Wye, the dog friendly Boat Inn was built in 1789 and still boasts many of the original interior features. High beams, flag stone floors and a split flight of stairs.

They have an outdoor seating area out the front allowing guests to enjoy a drink or meal overlooking the river.

Lunch is served on weekdays between 12pm-2.30pm and dinner is served between 5.30pm-8.30pm. On Saturdays, the kitchen is open 12pm-8.30pm and on Sundays between 12pm-4.30pm.

You can make reservations via their website and if you are bringing your four-legged friend be sure to let them know.

3. The Hanbury Arms, Caerleon

Just down the road from the Ship Inn is another Caerleon favourite, The Handbury, which once was a traditional coaching inn.

They are particularly popular on a summer’s afternoon with their huge beer garden, boasting views over the River Usk and Caerleon Bridge.

Their classic pub food menu includes options such as lasagne, curries and scampi. Of course, they also offer a Sunday roast.

The Hanbury opens every day between 11am-11pm.

4. The Bell Inn, Caerleon

Nestled in the outskirts of Caerleon, in an area known as ‘Ultra Pontem’, is The Bell Inn on Bulmore Road. Located near the banks of the River Usk, just down the hill from the Celtic Manor Resort.

They serve modern pub cuisine with real ales, ciders, wines and spirits and open Tuesday – Saturday between 12-11pm and Sundays between 12-10pm.

With ample parking behind the pub and plenty of covered seating in the beer garden, it is an accessible place for you and your pup to spend some quality time.

Manager and Chef Rickie Ash told the Argus: “We're really popular with the locals here, particularly on Friday nights when the bar is absolutely packed.”

"I think we're a popular place for drinks too, especially as we have some really good pale ales here, including Timothy Taylor and Wye Valley HPA."

"We're a really honest pub. We just serve good food, good beer, and like to keep it simple with lots of popular pub classics."

There is regular live music on Sundays. You can find their kitchen’s opening hours on their website.

Please note dogs are only allowed in their outdoor seating area.

5. The Bridge Inn, Abergavenny

The Bridge Inn is a friendly pub with en-suite rooms located next to the River Usk in Llanfoist offering a range of beers, ales and other drinks.

With a beer garden overlooking the river, it is the perfect place to go on a summer’s day after a dog walk with your family and pets.

This Sunday they are hosting live music and pizzas in collaboration with local band Green Light and Captain Brown’s Pizza Bar. Keep up to date with their Facebook page for more information on future events.

As well as plenty of dog walks nearby, there is cycling trails and fishing hotspots. They open Monday to Sunday from 12pm to 9pm.

6. Olway Inn, Usk

Nestled in the beautiful Welsh countryside is the Olway Inn in Usk, which has the perfect pub garden that your furry friends will love.

Serving a range of draught beers and classic pub food it is a great place to stop and enjoy the countryside. They also have menus catering to children.

This family-run pub is 200 years old and has been kept as traditional looking as possible.

The current owners took over in June 2023 and said: “It is just going lovely, if you want to come to a friendly family run pub then this is the place to come.”

“The price of our food and drink is very reasonable. You do not get town prices, you get country prices!”

Just 15 minutes from Raglan Farm, it could be part of a fabulous summer’s day out for the whole family. Many visitors tend to stop here on their way through to Pembroke.

They also have a huge carpark where campers can park for free - as long as they use the pub facilities.

This family friendly establishment is open between 12-11pm, serving food all day. On Sundays they open between 12-4pm serving a homemade Sunday lunch.
