RESIDENTS were evacuated from their homes yesterday as a fire broke out at a nearby garage. 

Multiple fire crews were called to deal with the incident. 

South Wales Fire and Rescue Service were called to the single storey commercial garage in Hill Street, Rhymney, at around 4.45pm on Monday, July 29. 

Crews and appliances from Ebbw Vale, Aberbargoed, Merthyr Tydfil, Caerphilly Stations attended the scene.

Four main jets and three water bowsers were called to help extinguish the fire. 

Gwent Police and Natural Resources Wales also attended the scene. 

South Wales Fire and Rescue Service have said that the structure is so unstable that "no further fire investigation will be possible", and the cause is "undetermined". 

A spokesperson for South Wales Fire and Rescue Service said: "SWFRS received a call to reports of a fire at a single storey commercial garage, Hill Street Rhymney at approximately 16.48pm on 29th July.

"Crews and appliances from Ebbw Vale, Aberbargoed, Merthyr Tydfil, Caerphilly Stations attended the scene and used 4 x main jets and 3 water bowsers to extinguish the fire.

"National Resources Wales conducted environmental impact assessments on scene. Police secured the area and evacuated nearby properties.

"Due to the instability of the structure no further fire investigation will be possible, and the cause is undetermined.

"The stop message was given at 20.54.

"Roads were reopened at around 21.30 pm."
