TODAY an inquest opened into the death of Marcus Barter after a body found was confirmed to be that of the 30-year-old father.

Marcus Barter, 30, of Newport, a young father, was reported missing by his family on August 3, 2024. 

On September 10, Gwent Police confirmed a body had been found in the search for Marcus Barter. 

It was heard that on September 8, 2024, members of the public searching for Mr Barter found a body lying face down in a field in Llanmartin, Newport, near the M4.

Rose Farmer, Area Coroner for Gwent said: "The circumstances are he was reported missing to Gwent Police on August 3, 2024, and he had previously expressed thoughts of self-harm.

“On September 8, 2024, members of the public out searching for Mr Barter came across a body lying face down in some undergrowth. 

“The body was decomposing, and a dental comparison was required to confirm it was in fact Mr Barter.” 

The inquest will take place on March 27, 2024, after enquiries have been made to ascertain the cause of death. 

A ‘living nightmare’- a family's search for their missing father 

The search for the missing father began when his family reported him missing on August 3, 2024.

It was reported that he was initially last seen near his home on July 27, 2024.

Chief Inspector David Morris had said the biggest challenge in finding him was the rural location of his disappearance. 

“The biggest challenge in this case is its rural location and that Marcus’ phone has not released any phone signal,” said the inspector.

The last sighting of Marcus Bater was later found on CCTV footage at around 2.30pm near Coed y Caerau Lane on Thursday, August 1.

The Chief Inspector David Morris confirmed another possible sighting of Marcus on the same day. 

The search by Gwent Police involved several strategies including the use of drones, helicopters and police dogs. 

On August 16, Gwent Police revealed they were contacting Mountain Rescue for assistance with the investigation.

There were several developments in the search which lasted over a month. 

The police, family and friends continued to search for the missing father until the body was found on September 8.
