There is a cartoon from Private Eye that I have pinned up on my desk. It depicts a man putting his coat on, leaving party, and saying "Must dash...I want to spend some time on my social networking websites".
With the advancement of technology, you need never go out again. Not only now can you speak to your friends and relatives via webcam, but you can advance through social circles on Facebook. My boss is on Facebook. This is not, I repeat NOT, a good thing. Facebook started out as a University social networking site - sort of a friends reunited with bells on. Insanely, now it is open to everyone, literally everyone, you never have to speak to anybody face-to-face again. Technically (no pun intended) I've had another job interview via Facebook. My boss now knows who I'm in a relationship with, what party I last went to, the extent of my miniskirt collection and how good I am at pole-dancing. Suprisingly, I've not been sacked/promoted yet!
Not only can you make friends remotely, you can form a relationship remotely. I read about a couple that met on a site called Second Life, where you can create an avatar of yourself and virtually meet people. You can even have virtual...(struggles to find word Argus will not *** out)....intercourse (!) on this site. So with virtual friends, virtual conversation and virtual 'mating', what more do you need?
How about virtual exercise! All you need to do is spend a fortune on a white tube and then stand in your living room waving it up and down very quickly, on your own. Alternatively, you can invite a friend round and both stand in the living room in total silence, waving your arms up and down while eating out of your KFC bucket. Whilst people send you messages via facebook and your virtual self has s*x with your virtual partner. Who said we can't all multi task eh?
I find the concept of people all over the country standing in their living rooms waving their arms up and down hilarious. In an attempt to briaden means of communication, each of us is now a recluse. Oh how technology has advanced us!
