Bloggers are like buses, you don’t see one for ages then four turn up together.
The funny thing about blogging, when you’re not doing it you can think of dozens of things you COULD blog about, then, when you commit yourself, inspiration frequently evaporates and you sit in front of the PC hypnotised by the flashing cursor with your mind as blank as the screen in front of you.
You sit and think about what you’ve heard, what you’ve seen, what you’ve read in the news, TV programmes, books, music, gossip. Rumours you could start, rumours you wish you HAD started. There are a million things you could write about but one by one you discard them all; too hard, too long, too short, too dumb, too boring. You can’t share all the really juicy stuff that people actually WANT to read because you never know who is going to see it. Basically you’re trying to write something that you hope someone somewhere might find vaguely interesting or amusing but without giving too many personal secrets away and without causing offence, without alienating anyone, without irreparably committing yourself to anything in case any oddballs start writing to you, without being indiscrete, and without making yourself sound totally boring or illiterate in the process.
Unless you live a really, really exciting life, or feel so passionately about something that you feel you absolutely must share it with the four other bloggers who actually read it, the choice of topics quickly narrows down to a blog about the weather or what you had for tea last night.
So why do we do it? Could it be we’re all looking for the fifteen minutes of fame that famous, weird, dead artist once said we were all going to get? Perhaps we have too much time on our hands and nothing better to do? And really, what ELSE can you do with a PC when you have one? Might as well use it for something.
Sausage, egg, and chips.
It’s raining.
