If the original plans had stayed in place, I would have finished my internship two weeks ago. But I haven't. I'm still there, uploading features and talking politely to PRs and wandering around the fashion cupboard in a pair of stunning Christian Louboutin heels (press samples; such a shame they have to be sent back)... because I was asked to keep working the end of May. I suppose I must be doing something right, since that actually doubles the length of my placement there (proud, me? Oh, alright then) and gives me a bit more time to find permanent employment. Yes, I have spent most of my recent life job-hunting.
The word 'hunting' is often associated with cavemen-style people, carrying sharp sticks and savagely hunting down some meat in order to avoid death by starvation. Job-hunting is similar, except the stick is replaced by a meticulously planned CV, and the wild boar is replaced by a Job of Dreams. Death by starvation is still, however, the eventual outcome of failure.
But imagine this: there's a shortage of wild boar (I don't know whether they're actually endangered in reality - whatever, this is a metaphor) and as a result, they are sighted only once every six months or so. There's about a zillion hungry cavemen waiting for said event. And as soon as one does stride out into the world - or whenever a job advert does appear - there's a lot of animal-print wearing fashionistas ready to jump all over it. One of us succeeds; the rest go hungry.
Not such an easy task then.
The problem with fashion journalism is, aside from the obviously intense competition (apparently you can't just stroll into Vogue and demand employment - can't think why) is that the jobs don't actually come up that often. I've been living in London for nearly eight months now, and have seen just two Dream Jobs advertised in that time. Oh, the life of a graduate... we're not exactly drowning in options, bless us.
I'm concerned that my stick isn't sharp enough and I'll be forced to spend my life beeping loaves of bread through supermarket checkouts. I have no issue with that, except all this higher education would have gone slightly to waste. And let's not even start on paying back the student loan...
