AN ABERTILLERY family is still waiting for answers 18 months after the tragic house fire which killed RAF corporal Andy Greenough and his two children.
Cpl Greenough, 37, from Six Bells, Abertillery, was with his five-year-old son Evan, and daughter Nia, two, when the blaze started at their home in the family quarters of RAF Akrotiri near Limassol, Cyprus.
Despite an extensive investigation by the Ministry of Defence, no answers have yet been given to the cause of the tragedy, which happened on March 17, 2007.
Cpl Greenough’s cousin Leonard Greenough, 60, of Cwmtillery said: “We have heard no news as of yet and as you can imagine it is still a delicate time.
“It has been a very long time now.”
Cpl Greenough’s wife Eirlys, from Merthyr Tydfil, was on a night out when the fire broke out, which is believed to have started in the kitchen and spread quickly through the rest of the house.
The couple had been married for nine years and it was their second tour in Cyprus with the family planning a trip home the following month.
Cpl Greenough’s sister Leanne, said at the time of his death: “He was a lovely guy, genuine and friendly, who doted on his two children. He was a family man and they meant everything to him.”
A spokesman for the Ministry of Defence said: “The investigation into the circumstances of the death of Cpl Greenough and his children in a house fire in Cyprus in March 2007 is currently ongoing.
“Once the board of inquiry is complete it will be sent to the Gwent coroner who will then set a date for an inquest.
“Cpl Greenough’s relatives will be kept informed of any further developments.”
