A 38-YEAR-OLD man was jailed for 15 months after pleading guilty to theft and breaching his community orders.
James Derek Pick, of Laburnum Close, Newport, appeared for sentencing in the city's crown court, charged with two counts of theft and two community order breaches.
Prosecutor David Pinnell told the court a woman returned to her car in the Queensway car park in Newport on July 24 to find a window broken and her satellite navigation unit and digital camera missing from her the boot of her car.
Police found blood on the passenger seat, which led them to arrest pick on August 18. When he was interviewed, Pick told police he had sold the items for £60 to buy heroin.
The second theft happened on October 9, when Pick stole eight bottles of vodka from Somerfield in Monmouth and sold them for £132.92 to buy shoes for his children.
Both of the breaches related to similar incidents of theft, while he was on a community order.
Representing Pick, Ian Ibrahim said Pick realised his life was a mess due to his addiction to class A drugs, but he was remorseful.
Judge Roderick Denyer said: “On and off for the past 20 years, you have been in the justice system. We have tried community orders and locked you up, but none of it works. It is all rather sad. You have been offer two community orders recently and you have just made a mess of it.”
Pick was ordered to serve a total of 15 months.
