TESCO is planning on axing 35 jobs from its distribution centre in Magor.
Staff at the centre, which employs around 1,000 people, were yesterday told that the company was seeking 35 voluntary redundancies next month.
A Tesco spokesman said a review of the service showed the jobs were no longer necessary.
"We carry out a number of reviews each year on all of our services not only our distribution centres."
He said labour-saving technology meant the company no-longer needed such man-power.
"We carry out these reviews to ensure our services are at their best and most efficient for the customer," he said.
If the company does not receive the desired voluntary redundancies it's understood compulsory job losses could be ordered.
One worker who has worked at the centre for over 10 years said he thought the decision was "disgusting".
"The feeling is that a lot of people are annoyed and gutted about it. They're saying there's no work for us.
He said with losses being announced before Christmas, workers were worried about further announcements in the New Year.
"People are worried that after Christmas again they'll say there's no work for us."
The Union of Shop, Distributive, and Allied Workers, representing many of the staff at the centre, has said they are in consultation with Tesco but were not in a position to give further comment.
On May 2, this year we reported how around 40 cleaning jobs at the centre were being farmed out to a third-party agency.
