THESE are the two women who died after being hit by a car on the way home from buying chips in Cwmbran.

Doreen Morgan, 74, and Sylvia Softley, 73, were walking over the bridge on Llandowlais Street, Oakfield, on Friday, October, 3, when they were hit by a car at 12.25pm.

Both women died later at the Royal Gwent Hospital in Newport.

Eyewitnesses said the women, both residents at the Oak Tree Court OAP apartments on Fields Road, were returning from buying chips at a takeaway close to the bridge.

An inquest into the deaths was opened and adjourned last week. Gwent coroner David Bowen said Mrs Morgan died of multiple injuries due to trauma with contributing heart problems and Mrs Softley died of shock and multiple fractures due to trauma.

Floral tributes from family and friends were left at the scene. One tribute said: “Sylvia, thank you for being my stepmother for these past 51 years. You lived through many troubled times, however, I’m so glad to be a part of this family that brought you love, strength and support during these last 12 months.”

An 81-year-old man, who was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving, was released on bail pending further inquiries.
