Despite persistent rain on Sunday, the Companion Dog Show in St Briavels attracted an estimated 200 visitors from all over the country and 100 pooches of all description.
Locals took on the war effort as the forecast turned gloomier in the days leading up to the show as extra marquees, tents & gazebos were sought out and erected at the last minute in the freezing wind and rain.
Co-organiser Karen Cockfield said “Had the weather been dry I I have no doubt we would have had at least three times as many people turn up. We had received many calls from all over the country and even as it was, we had visitors from London, Birmingham, Leicester, Lancashire, Bristol, Cardiff & Worcester. Dog lovers are very dedicated people and are used to being out in all weather walking their four legged friends, so are not so easily put off by rain.
“Of course many of them had been attracted by our top judge, Mike Gadsby, who did an excellent job and kept people organised and amused as he cast his expert eye over the dogs.
“The novelty classes were great too and top American handler, Jason Lynn, put a smile on many a young face as he awarded their pet some accolade, from being the best rescue dog, to the funniest fancy dress.
“We raised around £600 which could easily have trebled if the weather had been better, but we’re still pleased with the result; It was a success. Many, many thanks to all our sponsors and to Mike & Jason for travelling from Blackpool especially for the day, but especially to all the fantastic friends and neighbours who pitched in to help out. They were amazing and worked very hard in appaling conditions to make sure we were water tight on the day!”
Mike Gadsby said of the show, “It was wonderful to see so many people turn up with their families and their pet despite the rain, to enjoy themselves whilst raising money for St Briavels Assembly Rooms. Purebred & mixed breeds alike it is clear people are passionate about their canine companions. It was a great day and I was delighted to help out”.
The winners of the day will be published on the web site www. wyedean-dogshow.co.uk by the end of the week.
